More great news for south of the Thames – saw 2 new unexpected docking stations ready to go live in Elephant & Castle earlier today:
A large 47 point dock on St George’s Road (but named Gaywood Street) and which will support Geraldine Street and Ontario Street docks.
And on Westminster Bridge Road just past Lambeth North Station and King Edward Walk docks on the right a 26 point dock.
Only disappointment is despite being announced on the Docking Station Status web page for over a week now, the new dock at Vauxhall Walk remains closed – this would have helped out enormously the other night re full docking stations in the area – recommend the Tea House Theatre opposite.
BTW the pavement for Stonecutter Street 2 has been fenced off and levelled – opposite two Serco guys still sit on the pavement guarding the mass of bikes stored on the pavement!

I used to print receipts every time then realised that getting to the point where you can select to print the journey you have just done shows the bike is docked. Just touch "Home" instead of the journey. Saves collecting a wallet full of paper.

Wonder why Camden is going live ahead of E-Day? It sort of loses the impact, but then it's good that we have them available straight away.

I was at Westfield yesterday. Docks are under construction there (one really quite big) but they'll have to rush to get them ready for 8 March.

I'm increasingly frustrated around the St James area. No bikes at all tonight. Pall Mall dock was never replaced, and as far as I know no new ones are planned. Maybe we could co-operate to push for better provision in that area.

The Camden Town, Bonny Street dock, mentioned above, went live this afternoon with a massive 45 points, so maybe the go live date for new docks in this area will roll out before 8th March?
Similarly in Chelsea as Manresa Road also went live with 18 points.

This is a boris-bike user forum, so not the place for you to get your complaint heard.

And don't expect any pro-HGV opinions here! For us, HGV's are a dangerous menace!

Boris Bikes - WHY????????
OK it's happened now - accepted. But NOW where ever there was a decent space for HGV's to park and deliver to local businesses - has been taken up by BORIS BIKES.
Just to top it up - Westminster Council has REMOVED (restricted) so many more parking spaces (by painting kerb marks) - it's become increasingly difficult to deliver in London??????? Westminster Council doesn't believe in "Loading Bays".
And these policy makers really don't have a clue as long as PCN's are issued left right and centre - SHAFTED.

Yes there are.

The ones that some Waitrose stores lend out attach like this - http://www.bikeradar.com/news/article/waitrose-launches-free-bike-trailers-19847/

. After a lot of writing to the enquiries team and to the emails provided on this list, I got a refund. Essentially I re-stated the facts that I told them on the phone, and also let them know about how frustrating my story was (you can check it on the thread on Parkway horror stories) and they did solve the issue. The response was professional and to be fair timely, and this is consistent with similar feedback on this list. Yet I feel this docks issues should be revisited by TFL, as many of us are experiencing the same. This bike scheme is a good idea, but yet needs to improve implementation.

Hi I agree that printing the journey could be a good strategy but you should not be on the defensive to use this service. In any case after I wrote a letter, and wrote to a lot of people, they agreed to offer a refund. They had a problem with the sensors, and they acknowledged it.They solved the matter quickly, and that is a good point on their side, but still it was quite upsetting. I will see if I use this service again.

Hi bikers.

I'm an MA Broadcast Journalism student at City University making a TV news film about the expansion of boris bikes to East London. I figured that this was the best place to come for bike enthusiasts - and a more balanced opinion than from TFL!

I wondered whether anyone would be available at all today for a brief interview on camera about the pros and cons of the scheme and to what extent you think it's a success. I understand it's a long shot that anyone is free today but it really would only take 10 minutes and would be an enormous help! I'm based in Central London and will be free most of the day.

Do give me a call on 07595960465 or matthewtyzack@gmail.com if this is of interest to any BCH evangelists (or critics!), I'd be extremely grateful.

Many thanks

I've heard that Queen's Walk (connecting Picadilly to the Mall) is under consideration for allowing cycling, though I think that's a way off yet. And totally agree about the north side. Plus give us a Buckingham Palace dock! Plenty room on Birdcage Walk too.

Yes I got the green light, I usually wait for it because I have been warned before about this, so I take extra care. Thanks

Did you get a green light when you docked it?

If you did then there is no justification for TfL to charge you.

If you didn't...

So I usually use these bikes (casual user) and I already had one incident in which they took 400 pounds out of me, because apparently I never returned the bike. Eventually we sorted this out. But on Sunday I took the bike from Holborn to Parkway (as I usually do)and docked it there.Next morning I was not able to use my card on the docking station. I thought this was technical error, and moved on to the next docking station in Morning Crescent but I got the same problem. After calling them they told me that I had yet not returned my bike. They gave me a number of the bike and I had to walk back to Parkway where I found it. The bike was there, and was locked but the sensor did not picked up the bike. They told me that now they were able to allow me to use the bike scheme, but I would have to pay 50 pounds, for the hours I "used" the bike. I find this outrageous, and I told them I will not pay. I also asked them for a refund inmediatly but I got an email from them saying that they reviewed and I should go for a formal complaint. I am wasting my time and money thanks to these people, and I think that these sensors issue is a great handicap to the scheme. I would appreciate some advice on how to move this forward.

The only thing I've seen with a seat post hitch are those little kids attach-a-bikes..I haven't been able to find in the bike cargo trailer, any tips?

From what I have seen though throughout the rest of North and West London is that these "cheaper-to-install" racks are usually in quieter roads, not blocking one of three lanes of a very busy one way system.

(Try putting your finger over the end of a hose pipe or tap and see the water spray everywhere)

I'm not sure of the others but those near Gt Portland street of similar design ( back into the road), the cycles are docked well within the white boundary line.

In parkway the cycles overhang the line, into the traffic flow.

Yes, it is 8 March. Came from a TfL press release:

Less than one month to go until Barclays Cycle Hire goes east
· Extension of the scheme to open on Thursday 8 March

· Almost 10 million hires since launch

The launch date for a major eastern expansion of the Mayor’s flagship Barclays Cycle Hire scheme has been confirmed as Thursday 8 March 2012.

From that date the iconic bikes will be available beyond central London across the whole of the Borough of Tower Hamlets as well as North Shoreditch in the Borough of Hackney, Camden Town, Canary Wharf and Westfield White City. Altogether 2,300 more bikes and 4,800 extra docking points are being installed across the existing and new Barclays Cycle Hire area.

The expanded scheme will cover approximately 65km² of the capital, and over 8,300 hire bikes will be available from 15,000 docking points at hundreds of locations across central and east London.

It was also confirmed today that Barclays Cycle Hire has now been used for almost ten million journeys since its launch just 18 months ago in central London. Thousands of Londoners and visitors use the iconic blue bikes everyday stating value for money, convenience and speed as key reasons for taking to two wheels.

To date over 150,000 people have signed up as members of the scheme and between them they have made over 7.7 million hires. Casual users of the scheme have purchased over one million access periods making over 2.1 million journeys since the casual users function became available in December 2010.

Last year the Mayor also asked TfL to prepare plans for a westward expansion of the cycle hire scheme through the boroughs of Wandsworth, Hammersmith & Fulham, Lambeth and Kensington & Chelsea.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: “I promised London a cycle hire scheme and I’m extremely proud to deliver it. These bikes have changed the face of the city, eased the lives of many commuters and proved a huge attraction for the visitors we need in tough times to bring jobs and growth to our economy. The expansions east and west will extend the benefits across our city and I’m confident that our investment in this wonderful piece of transport infrastructure will be a huge success.”

Ashok Vaswani, CEO Barclays UK Retail and Business Banking, said: “Barclays Cycle Hire has undoubtedly been a huge success and the extension to east London will mean even more people will benefit from this bold and pioneering initiative. Barclays Cycle Hire now reaches our global headquarters in Canary Wharf so we are excited about the opportunity to mobilise our colleagues in the capital. This scheme is a demonstrable example of our commitment to the communities in which we serve.”

Leon Daniels, TfL’s Managing Director of Surface Transport, said: “We are delighted to announce the launch date for the second phase of Barclays Cycle Hire; from Thursday 8 March the bikes will be available at hundreds of locations right across the capital. The bikes are extremely popular in central London, with users making journeys for business and leisure; now even more people can discover that cycling is one of the most enjoyable ways to get around London.”

Jeremy Stafford, Serco Civil Government’s Chief Executive said: “Serco is on track to deliver this major expansion of the Barclays Cycle Hire scheme on behalf of TfL. It has proved a great success with Londoners and visitors alike and we are proud to be able to extend this popular service to other parts of the capital.”

Becoming a Barclays Cycle Hire member still remains the fastest way to access a bike with no queuing at the on street terminals. UK residents can start using the cycle hire scheme as a member for just £4 – the cost of buying the membership key (£3) and their first 24 hour access period (£1).

Transport for London has also reminded cyclists of their Cycle Hire Users' Code of conduct, to help people use and enjoy the scheme safely. The Code's tips include:

· Be careful around lorries, which have numerous blind spots, and never pass them on the left just before, or at, traffic lights

· Don't get too close to parked cars

· Watch put for other vehicles and pedestrians and give clear hand signals to show your intentions

· Make yourself seen at night by wearing reflective or fluorescent clothing

People can also brush up on their cycle safety skills by taking two minutes to watch the Barclays Cycle Hire safety film at: http://www.youtube.com/user/BarclaysCycle

ENDS

Notes to editors:
TfL-funded adult commuter cycle training is available from boroughs by visiting: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/cycling
Barclays Cycle Hire accepts Visa and Mastercard credit and debit cards and Visa Electron
The creation of an easy-to-use cycle hire scheme was a key pledge of the Mayor's manifesto. Barclays Cycle Hire is now transforming the way that people make short trips around central London
Around 95 per cent of all journeys made by Barclays Cycle Hire members have been under 30 minutes, which means that the vast majority of people using the scheme aren't paying any more than their 24-hour £1, seven-day £5 or annual £45 access fees
Anti-skimming devices have been fitted to all Barclays Cycle Hire terminals; this additional measure ensures card readers are not tampered with. The anti-skimming devices use industry leading software, designed to prevent anyone placing a skimming device on a terminal
A membership key costs £3 with membership costs at £1 for a 24-hour membership, £5 for seven days and £45 for annual membership. The first 30 minutes of every journey is free. Find out how to become a member of Barclays Cycle Hire and advice on how to use the scheme
Members of the scheme must be at least 18 years old, and you need to be at least 14 years old to use the scheme
Barclays Cycle Hire and Barclays Cycle Superhighways are building on the massive 150 per cent growth in cycle journeys on London's major roads since TfL was created in 2000
Barclays Cycle Hire currently operates across central London. Docking stations and hire bicycles are currently available in Camden, City of London, Hackney, Islington, Lambeth, Kensington & Chelsea, Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Westminster and several of the Royal Parks
